Hadestown
Costume Design Project: Hadestown Quartet
Design Statement
Hadestown demonstrates the ways self-doubt can be one's own worst enemy. It’s a tragedy that has complex characters that parallel each other in various ways. I was drawn to the underlying themes of fate and desperation in the story. My design concept for this piece is to focus on a German expressionism aesthetic, mainly using a blend of 1920s Berlin, and gothic victorian inspired fashion. German expressionism focuses expressing fear, critiquing society, and the spiritual world.
For my quartet I chose The Fates, Eurydice, Orpheus, and Hades. Each of these characters is connected through the fates, as they are each characters that have been taunted by the fates, having their doubts narrated out loud. Orpheus and Eurydice are the main characters of the show. Their relationship impacts the entire show. Orpheus and Hades are direct parallels. Orpheus symbolizes the experience of young and innocent love, while Hades represents the toxic and flawed aspects of love. Their relationship ultimately leads to the tragic ending, where Hades gives Orpheus the chance to save Eurydice but ultimately fails. Lastly, Eurydice and Hades are connected because he initially gives her hope that if she stays in Hadestown, then she will be able to escape poverty and be free. Their relationship affects the show as it builds the plot up for the ultimate climax in the show.
