Design Statement

My approach to this design was to make it seem like an older person lived there. Seeing as I envision Kyra and Tom's relationship as unhealthy from the start, that would have led her to mature faster. However, she is emotionally immature, so I wanted to include some subtle signs of this, mainly through paintings on the wall that show a more vibrant and colorful side of her than the rest of the apartment. Furthermore, I also looked into London lofts for inspiration on what they are typically laid out like. I also looked into common house trends from the 90s, where many of these small ideas originated, such as plants and blanket-and-curtain designs. I also wanted to add many of the details listed in the play's stage directions, such as a rug, spaghetti ingredients, and many books scattered around the place. I wanted to make sure that this apartment was lived in, and it was messy, like it would be for someone who lived alone. I also added a slight nod to their relationship and what happens at the end of the first act, where they hug and spend the night together, by adding a clock at the top of the hallway entrance. That symbolizes the couple going back in time to when their relationship was at its peak. This is the first 3D scenic design project I have worked on.
